Vol. 328 No. 8

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

185.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the unacceptable situation that exists in the Western Health Board area regarding patients who are in need of orthodontic treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there is an extensive waiting list in the Western Health Board area for orthodontic treatment. The demand for this form of treatment has increased substantially in recent years and has resulted in increased waiting lists throughout the country as a whole because of the shortage of orthodontists and the length of time taken to complete treatments. To alleviate the overall situation I have agreed to the appointment of five whole-time orthodontists by health boards, as I have already indicated in my reply on 4 February last to Deputy Fitzpatrick.
