Vol. 328 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Person's Tax Free Allowance.

323.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of a grievance of a person (details supplied) in Dublin in relation to her tax free allowance; whether the allowance is accurate; and if he will undertake to investigate this complaint.

I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that arrears of income tax arose in this case for the years 1973 - 74 to 1976 - 77, inclusive, in respect of a particular source of income. Her tax-free allowances for these years were set against her income from her employment. Assessments were made by the inspector of taxes to recover the sums undercharged but, as she had difficulty in paying the amount due, it was agreed to have her tax-free allowances in connection with her employment adjusted to meet the liability.

Recovery of the balance of the tax unpaid as at 5 April 1981 is being spread over the period up to 5 April 1983 by a restriction of her tax-free allowances. Pursuant to this arrangement an amended certificate of tax-free allowances for the year 1981-82 is being sent to the taxpayer.
