Vol. 328 No. 9

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Oral Irish.

339.

asked the Minister for Education when the allocation of 33? per cent of marks for oral Irish in the leaving certificate will become effective.

As stated in the Government's White Paper on Educational Development it is proposed that 33? per cent of the total marks for Irish in the leaving certificate examination will be reserved for the oral examination. My Department will shortly consult the appropriate organisations, including the Syllabus Committee in Irish, for the purpose of devising the most appropriate methods of achieving that objective. A review of the syllabus in Irish will be a necessary step in this process. Adequate notice of the date of its implementation will be given to the schools concerned.
