Vol. 328 No. 9

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

385.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in regard to the telephone application of a person (details supplied) in County Kerry; and when it is likely that installation will take place.

Because of the volume of engineering work involved, 4 km of cabling, in providing service for this applicant, it has not, regrettably, been possible to provide service within the normal time after completion of the agreement. Cabling will be completed by the end of this month after which service will be provided.

386.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone will be supplied to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin who has been waiting three years for service.

Towards the end of this year.

387.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if cables have been laid for telephone connections to a block of flats (details supplied) in County Dublin; and when the residents may expect the installation of telephones.

The necessary cables have not yet been laid but it is expected they will be provided about the end of this year at which time service will be offered to waiting applicants.

388.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in relation to Grange Valley, Dublin 16, (a) how many telephone connections have been made to date; (b) how many of those connected qualified for priority connection under each of the priority headings identified by him in his answer to Parliamentary Question No. 294 of 29 May 1980; (c) the number of applicants who did not feature on the priority list who have been connected; (d) the number of applicants who featured on the priority list who have not yet been connected and the reason for the failure to give them priority; (e) whether the length of time an applicant is waiting for service gives priority and, if so, to what extent; (f) if any non-priority applicants were connected before priority applicants, and, if so, why; and (g) when the proposed telephone kiosk for the estate will be provided and made operational.

The information requested is as follows: (a) ten; (b) eight (six removals; one medical doctor; one clergyman); (c) two; (d) twenty-six, the priority accorded is that, subject to the availability of necessary plant, service will be provided for an applicant ahead of other applicants in the area. Because the necessary cabling and exchange facilities are not available it has not yet been possible to provide service for these applicants; (e) In normal course non-priority applications are cleared in date of application order. In some instances, however, such as clearance of a large block of waiting applicants in a housing estate, service is provided for applicants according as engineering work progresses; (f) Service was provided for two non-priority applicants, who applied in 1976, as the necessary cabling to do so was available; (g) within the next three months or so.

389.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in transferring the telephone of a person (details supplied) in Dublin from his former to his present address.

Cabling work has to be carried out before the transfer can be made. It is expected this work will be done towards the end of this year.

390.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for a telephone to be connected for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who has been waiting five years for a telephone; and if he can arrange to have him connected to the 01 system.

Provision of service is dependent on expansion of the local exchange and provision of new pole route. Additional capacity will be provided when the local exchange is converted to automatic working during the first half of 1982 but the possibility of extending the existing manual exchange and so enabling service to be provided in the meantime is being explored. It would not be practicable for engineering reasons to connect the service for this applicant to the 01 system.

391.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is a shortage of cabling in the Tara area of County Meath for new telephones; the approximate number of people waiting for telephones in the area due to the lack of such cabling; and when cabling will be laid.

There are about 130 applicants awaiting service in the area. At present service is being offered to about 60 of these for whom cable was recently provided and it is expected that service will be given within three months of completion of the necessary agreement. The remainder will be offered service as cable is made available progressively throughout the next year.

392.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need for additional telephones in Moyglare, Maynooth, County Meath; if so, additional cabling is necessary for the connection of these telephones; if so, when the cabling will be connected; and the number of applications in the area which are dependent on the completion of cabling.

Yes. Additional cabling work has to be done to enable service to be provided for the three applicants in the area. Because of the volume of other engineering work awaiting attention in the district, this cabling work is unlikely to be attended to for at least a year.

393.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for a telephone to be connected to the premises of a person (details supplied) in County Meath, in view of the very serious disability that the lady has suffered as a result of a road accident.

Service to this applicant is dependent on the provision of an extensive new pole route. Because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention at present it is, regrettably, likely to be at least a year before this work can be done.

394.

Mr. O'Leary

Service is dependent on the provision of cabling which it is expected will be completed towards the end of this year.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when his Department will be in a position to offer telephone service to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.

397.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his Department have purchased a site for a telephone exchange at Carna, Connemara, County Galway; and if he will give details including the cost of the site.

The answer to the first part of the question is yes. The area of the site is 22 sq. perches. It would be contrary to practice to disclose the price paid for it.
