Vol. 328 No. 11

Written Answers. - Farmers Rates Liability.

216.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that farmers with land valuations under £40 per annum are liable to pay full rates in the financial year 1980; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Farmers whose aggregate land valuation in county health districts was under £40 qualified under the Agricultural Grant for relief of rates on land in the local financial year 1980 as follows:—

—rated occupiers of holdings with land valuations of £20 or less received full relief of rates.

—rated occupiers of holdings with land valuations of more than £20 and less than £33 received full relief of rates on the first £20 valuation.

—rated occupiers of holdings with land valuations of £33 or over but less than £40 received relief of 80 per cent of the rates on the first £20 valuation and 30 per cent of the rates on the portion of the valuation over £20.

Thus for the farmers concerned whose land valuation was under £40 the relief given varies depending on the rateable valuation but it exceeds 50 per cent in all cases.
