Vol. 328 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Consultants' Contract.

29.

asked the Minister for Health if the common contract for hospital consultants came into effect on 1 April 1981; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My approval was issued on 23 March 1981 to the introduction, from a date not earlier than 1 April 1981, of a common form of contract for consultant medical staff in hospitals providing services under the Health Acts.

Health boards and the authorities of certain voluntary hospitals are now taking the steps necessary to offer the new form of contract to consultants holding appointments with them. The other hospital authorities concerned are considering the adoption of the new form of contract and the implemtntation of its provisions.

Is the Minister in a position to say what proportion of hospital consultants are prepared to accept the contract? Is the Minister in a position to tell the House the reasons for the objections of the remaining hospital consultants who are opposed to it?

As the Deputy is aware, there was within the Irish Medical Association a difference of opinion. There was a marginal rejection of the contract whereas within the Irish Medical Union there was an overwhelming acceptance of the contract. Further discussions have been taking place with the Irish Medical Association with a view to providing whatever clarifications are deemed necessary. It is understood that following the recent meetings the association will circulate the contract with the clarification so that members may take what has been termed a free vote on the matter.
