Vol. 328 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Livestock and Beef Plan.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the policy changes he plans for the Irish livestock and meat sectors as a result of the national livestock and beef plan devised by all interests in the beef industry and published recently by the Irish Fresh Meat Exporters Society.

A copy of the plan referred to was received in my Department only recently and a study of it has not yet been completed.

Would the Minister not agree that he should make a statement on this as soon as possible because it is a most important area?

I agree that they are important proposals, the details of which reached the Department only in the course of the last two weeks.

Well, this report was widely published.

A preliminary of it was widely published but the detailed report——

Some comments made in the report were widely published. I am sure the Minister will accept that. It would seem that there are possibilities within that report which warrant urgent Government attention. Can the Minister give the House an undertaking that urgent attention will be given this particular area?

The Deputy can be assured that appropriate action will be taken.

A final supplementary from Deputy D'Arcy.

When can we expect the report from the Minister's Department, a definite date, because this is a very important issue?

I would say by the end of this month.
