asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the need to grant aid secondary schools who wish to carry out major structural improvements and repairs; and if he will make a statement on the matter with a view to making such grants available.

Normal repairs and improvements to secondary schools do not qualify for assistance under the Building Grants Scheme. The cost of such maintenance is a matter for the school authorities.
Where a major structural improvement is, however, undertaken in connection with a proposed extension to a school to provide additional accommodation as approved by my Department an appropriate agreed grant may be made towards the cost of the work.
