Vol. 329 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

33.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of man-days lost due to industrial disputes from 1 January 1981 to 30 June 1981; and how this compares with the same period in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

The Central Statistics Office is the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes but figures are not yet available from that office in respect of 1980 and 1981. My Department estimate, however; that 304,000 days were lost through strikes between 1 January 1980 and 30 June 1980 and that the figure for the same period in 1981 was 135,000.

Central Statistics Office figures are available in respect of the years 1975 to 1979 and these are as follows:—

1 January — 30 June 1975, 177,538; 1 January — 30 June 1976, 173,912; 1 January — 30 June 1977, 242,640; 1 January — 30 June 1978, 280,250; 1 January — 30 June 1979, 1,362,172.
