Vol. 329 No. 7

Written Answers. - Corofin (Galway) Housing.

79.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the decision to allocate funds for the Corofin housing scheme in County Galway has been changed; and, if not, when the scheme will start.

I am not aware of any decision having been made to allocate finance for this scheme. Under devolved procedures it is a matter for each local authority to plan and initiate any housing scheme of 60 houses or less having regard to the housing needs in their functional areas and to the capital resources available to them.

As I have recently announced, the Government have allocated an extra £30 million to the local authority housing programme in 1981. Galway County Council will be notified shortly of their revised allocation for the year. It will be a matter for the council to apportion the extra funds as between the various schemes and rural cottages having regard to the relative urgency of need within their functional area.
