Vol. 329 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

8.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a person (details supplied) in County Waterford, is not being paid unemployment assistance at the full rate on the termination of unemployment benefit.

The person concerned has been assessed with means of £10.20 derived from the value of board and lodging in his parents' home. If he continues to be unemployed after he has exhausted his entitlement to unemployment benefit, he will be entitled to unemployment assistance at the weekly rate of £9.55, namely, the maximum rate of £19.75 less means of £10.20. The person concerned has appealed against the assessment of means and arrangements have been made to have his case referred to an appeals officer for determination. The case will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

9.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a person (details supplied) in County Waterford is not being paid the old-age pension at the maximum rate.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the pension of the person in question has recently been increased to the maximum rate with effect from October 1980. He has also been granted a living alone allowance with effect from January 1981. The increase has been implemented by the issue of supplementary pension books and a payable order covering the arrears due.

That shows the value of a parliamentary question.

Deputies

Hear, hear.

A question please, Deputy.

A little preamble.

I was writing to Deputies Haughey and Woods for four years without any results.

(Interruptions.)
10.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in the payment of disability benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

The person concerned claimed disability benefit and submitted two medical certificates of incapacity dated 3 July and 10 July 1981. It has been ascertained from his employers however that his illness commenced 26 June and that he is still absent from work. Payment has now been made from 30 June 1981, fourth day of incapacity, to 24 July 1981 at the maximum appropriate rate. Pay-related benefit has also been paid. The delay in payment of benefit was due to industrial action by some members of the staff of my Department.
