Vol. 330 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Honours List.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if it is proposed to institute an Honours List so that citizens might be honoured for their work for the nation or for other worthy efforts.

The matter is not under consideration at present.

In view of the enormous service which Lord Killanin has given to the Olympic Games and to the cause of unity in sport throughout the world, would the Taoiseach not consider a special award recognising his services to the Olyimpic Games and to world unity and peace, and in the context of Ireland as a nation?

I can think of few people to whom an award would be more appropriate than Lord Killanin, but there is no provision for such an award and the matter is not under consideration at present. It has been raised in the past with successive Governments and twice in the lifetime of the previous Government. No action was then taken on it. It is not something at which we are looking at present. If it is a matter which the Opposition wish to raise in depth I would be happy to discuss it with the Leader of the Opposition in due course. However, in view of the negative attitude of the previous Government on the subject I am not sure that it will be pressed a great deal.
