Vol. 330 No. 1

Written Answers. - Harbour Improvements.

447.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will give details of the improvements, if any, his Department will carry out to the pier and harbour at Clogherhead, County Louth; and when these improvements will commence.

Cavan-Monaghan): A hydraulic model investigation of the conditions in Clogherhead harbour is at present being undertaken. When this investigation is completed and its results examined an engineering report and estimate of cost of whatever improvements are recommended by the marine engineers will be prepared and considered. Until I receive the engineering report I am not in a position to give details of the improvements which may be carried out or to state when the work at the harbour may be commenced.

448.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if joint consultations can be arranged between the appropriate agencies of his Department and the Departments of the Environment and Industry and Energy to undertake a proper harbour development plan for Killybegs, County Donegal.

Cavan-Monaghan): Killybegs harbour was declared a fishery harbour centre in 1969 under the Fishery Harbour Centres Act, 1968. The management, control, operation and development of the harbour centre is, therefore, a matter for the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry.

A major development scheme for the harbour was drawn up in the fishery interest and work on the scheme has been undertaken over the past ten years. Dredging of portion of the harbour is at present in progress and the need for other works, such as additional berthage accommodation, is under consideration. Consultations and discussions with fishermen, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Donegal County Council and other Government Departments and agencies are held as the need arises.
