Vol. 330 No. 1

Written Answers. - Employment of Redundant Workers.

488.

asked the Minister for Labour if people who have lost their jobs through redundancy and who are in receipt of large redundancy payments have priority in obtaining new jobs over people who have never been employed or who have been unemployed for two or three years and who have been registered with the National Manpower Service for that period of time.

The National Manpower Service has been established to provide an effective state placement and guidance service and it operates on a voluntary basis both in relation to registration of job seekers for employment and notification of vacancies by employers. While there is no obligation on persons made redundant to register with the National Manpower Service, many of them do and every effort is made to help them obtain suitable employment.

With regard to vacancies notified to the service, registered job seekers are referred to employers having regard to their suitability, experience and qualifications in relation to the job specifications outlined by employers.
