Vol. 330 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

536.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate his Department's regulation on the ex quota status of remedial teachers; the number of such teachers who were appointed ex quota in 1979-80 and 1980-81; and the number his Department intend to approve during the current year.

Remedial teachers in national schools are sanctioned in addition to the complement of teachers which the average enrolment at the schools would normally warrant under the Rules for National Schools. They are regarded as ordinary assistant teachers for the purpose of seniority, retention on the staff and of panel rights.

The following is a break-down of the number of remedial teachers appointed during 1979-80 and 1980-81 in national schools:-

Year

Number of Teachers Appointed

1979/80

140

1980/81

52

Since becoming Minister I have made provision for the appointment of 50 remedial teachers in national schools.

In the case of second-level schools, 100 remedial teacher posts were allocated in 1979-80 and 1980-81 for appointment outside the normal school quota.
