asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the number of non-established civil servants appointed in his Department since 30 June 1981; and if he will give their names, terms of appointment, duties and rate of remuneration in each case.

The following are the relevant particulars in respect of non-established civil servants appointed to my Department since 30 June 1981 other than those (a) appointed as a result of competitions conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners, (b) arising in the normal course of promotions, (c) appointed to posts listed as scheduled occupations in the First Schedule to the Civil Service Commissioners Act, 1956.

The Tánaiste appointed Mr. Alan Gray as his economic adviser. His salary is at present under consideration. The Tánaiste appointed Ms. Mairead Byrne as his political and European Community adviser with a salary equivalent to the principal (standard scale).

The Tánaiste appointed Ms. Frances Kelly and Ms. Helen O'Gara-Connolly as his personal secretarial assistants. Ms. Kelly is at present on a salary rate equivalent to the executive officer scale while Ms. O'Gara-Connolly is on the clerical officer scale.

I appointed Mr. Walter Morgan as my personal assistant on a salary equivalent to the clerical officer scale.

All appointments are on a short-term contract basis. The number will be reduced at the end of October when Ms. Byrne terminates her contract.
