Vol. 330 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilbeheny (Limerick) Public Lighting.

7.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the lack of public and route lighting at Kilbeheny, County Limerick; and if he will make funds available for this purpose.

A road grant of £10,000 was allocated to Limerick County Council in 1980 towards the cost of providing an acceptable standard of traffic route lighting at Kilbeheny. Design details and other documentation have not been submitted to my Department. In the meantime, I understand that the council has undertaken substantial preliminary works and have sought a quotation for the installation of lighting.

Kilbeheny is on the border of Cork and Limerick County Councils. Lights were being erected in that area earlier this year but this work has now ceased. Are Cork County Council erecting public lights along their side of the entrance to Kilbeheny town and when will this work be completed? There seems to be some disagreement between Cork County Council and Limerick County Council in this matter. When is it expected that the work will go ahead and, also, when do the ESB intend providing lighting which is an important factor as we approach the winter? Will it be possible to have the work expedited in the near future?

I am not sure what the connection is with Cork County Council. Kilbeheny is just over the border so the lighting would probably be a matter for Limerick County Council and they are going ahead with the work. The ESB are being asked to quote for the installation of the lighting. The money has been allocated and I assume that the work will go ahead immediately after the quotation is submitted.

Have Cork County Council been approached regarding the provision of route lighting on their side of the town?

I do not have that information but I shall obtain it for the Deputy.
