Vol. 330 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway City Shelter Accommodation.

22.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the urgent need for shelter accommodation in Galway City for the large number of persons who are sleeping rough there each night; and, if so, the assistance that his Department will make available to Galway Corporation to enable accommodation to be provided immediately.

I am so aware.

I understand that the question of the provision of a hostel for homeless men in Galway city is being considered by the Social Services Council, Galway Corporation and the Western Health Board. As the proposal involves the provision of shelter with assistance from State funds, my Department have advised the corporation that the proposal might more appropriately be referred to the Department of Health in the first instance.
