Vol. 330 No. 11

Written Answers. - Research Vessels.

517.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is satisfied that research vessels from other States which have worked last year and this year are not engaging in activities other than research; and if applications granted to such vessels secure sufficient information to allay concern in the matter.

Minister for Foreign Affairs (Professor Dooge)

My Department from time to time receive requests from foreign embassies for fisheries and oceanographic research cruises to take place in waters off our coast. All steps possible are taken to ensure that these vessels engage only in the activities for which permission is requested. To this end conditions are laid down which include the furnishing to the Irish authorities of copies of the cruise report and results and, when regarded as desirable, the presence of an Irish observer on board.
