Vol. 330 No. 13

Written Answers. - School Transport.

614.

(Wexford) asked the Minister for Education if he will instruct CIE to provide a school bus ticket to Donard national school for a child (details supplied) in County Wexford who is nearly blind and whose single parent is semi-disabled with no travel facilities.

Under the terms of the school transport scheme, free transport may be provided only to the nearest suitable school. Donard national school is not the nearest school to this child. Transport facilities are in fact available to her to her nearest school from a point about 100 yards from her home. The route of the service to Donard school is about two miles from her home and could not be extended in any event due to the condition of the roads in the area.

Accordingly, I am not in a position to provide free transport for this child to Donard national school.
