Vol. 331 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rock of Cashel Flood Lighting.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will provide full and complete flood lighting of the Rock of Cashel and ensure that the area is maintained in a clean state.

The provision of flood lighting at the Rock of Cashel would be outside the scope of the powers and responsibilities of the Commissioners of Public Works under the National Monuments Acts.

The present flood lighting system was provided by the local authority with the assistance of An Bord Fáilte and I understand that arrangements have been made to have it repaired and renewed before the next tourist season. The area of the Rock which is vested in the commissioners for preservation as a national monument is maintained on a regular basis.

Does the Minister agree that it is a disgrace that perhaps Ireland's most famous archaeological monument has been left with inadequate lighting for six months?

These lights are provided and maintained by the county council. They were installed by the county council with the assistance of Bord Fáilte. There are arrangements to have them repaired before the next tourist season. The commissioners have no responsibility in regard to these lights.
