Vol. 331 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Port Dispute.

16.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will take a fresh initiative to resolve the dispute involving dockers at Waterford port.

I have been keeping in touch with developments in this case. The stoppage at Waterford port is unofficial and has resulted from an internal trade union problem. The services of a rights commissioner were made available but, unfortunately, this did not lead to a resumption of work.

This experience confirms me in the view that the best prospects for settling the kind of dispute involved here lie within the trade union movement. It is encouraging that the Waterford Council of Trade Unions have been engaging in efforts to find a basis for settlement and I hope that their efforts will be successful.
