Vol. 331 No. 2

Written Answers. - AnCO Training Places.

623.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of AnCO training places in 1979, 1980 and 1981; the number of persons trained; the total number of apprenticeships offered by AnCO in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and the number trained; the total expenditure for each year; and the total grants from the EEC for training and apprenticeships.

†Decrease over previous year due to discontinuance of Career Training Programme and a drop in the numbers participating in the Community Youth Training Programme. However, there was an increase in the actual number of training man-days due to the lengthening of some courses.

624.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of young persons engaged in the AnCO and other work experience programmes in 1979, 1980 and 1981; the amount expended for each year; the success rate of finding permanent employment for participants; if he will make a statement on the success or otherwise of the programmes; and if there has been a decline in the numbers of young people involved in the programmes.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the Work Experience Programme operated by the National Manpower Service and to AnCO's Community Youth Training Programme.

The requested data is set out below:

Work Experience Programme

Year

Total No. of Participants

Expenditure (£000's)

1979

6,466

1980

7,258

2,126

1981 (up to the end of October, 1981)

7,430

1.861

It is estimated that over 80 per cent of the participants succeed in getting permanent employment either during or on completion of the programme, with more than half being retained by the employer who initially sponsored the work experience.

The above data shows that the Work Experience Programme is proving very successful, the number of young people involved in the programme increasing each year and the big majority of them finding jobs quickly.

The pattern appears to be that nearly half of the trainees obtain permanent employment on completion of their training.

The programme must also be regarded as successful. It has two particular advantages: (i) It has enabled AnCO to provide extra training in areas which are remote from training centres. (ii) It has assisted in the provision of community facilities/amenities. Since 1979 to date 315 projects have been completed.

There was a drop in the number of young people trained on the CYT Programme in 1980 as compared with 1979 but it is expected that the figure for the whole of 1981 will be roughly the same as that for 1979.
