The European Communities (Merchandise Road Transport) Regulations, 1977 came into force on 1 January 1978. They have been implemented since that date.
The Minister was absent last week when we tried to get information in relation to the introduction of the tachograph on 1 December. Could the Minister now tell the House if he has made any representations to have a derogation for a further year in relation to the tachograph?
The Deputy is well aware of the history in regard to the implementation of the tachograph and that considerable postponements and derogations were afforded this country. He must be equally well aware that the matter is now at the stage where it has to be implemented.
The question I asked the Minister is: did he make any approaches for a derogation for a further year? Would the Minister answer yes or no?
