Vol. 331 No. 4

Written Answers. - American Social Security Scheme Pensioners.

690.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that residents in this country who draw pensions under the American social security scheme are obliged to pay tax; if he is aware that those pensions vary from month to month because of currency variations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

United States social security pensions received by Irish residents are exempt from Irish income tax and I am not aware that tax has been charged in such circumstances. If, however, the Deputy knows of any case in which an Irish resident has been charged tax on such a pension I will have the matter investigated by the Revenue Commissioners on receipt of the relevant details.

I am aware that the value in Irish pounds of pension payments denominated in United States dollars may vary in accordance with fluctuations in the rates of exchange ruling at the relevant dates of encashment.
