Vol. 331 No. 4

Written Answers. - Housewife's Tax Allowance.

691.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of families who will be better off financially as a result of the £9.60 being paid to the housewife.

The family income supplement aspect of the £9.60 scheme is designed to confer a benefit of at least £4 per week on families whose taxable income is £2,000 or more and is not in excess of £4,000. Tapering relief will also provide some benefit to families whose taxable income does not greatly exceed £4,000. The number of low-income families who will benefit from these measures will depend on the number of such families who participate in the scheme. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 families are eligible for family income supplement.
