Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

707.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is no public telephone in working order serving the 600 houses in Fettercairn Estate, Tallaght, County Dublin; and if his Department will consult with the secretary of the local tenants' association (details supplied) for the purpose of relocating the public telephones at locations where the committee of the association can supervise them; and if, having regard to the particular needs of this area, the necessary arrangements will be made as a matter of urgency.

Because of the frequency and extent of the damage by vandalism to two telephone kiosks serving the Fettercairn estate the question of re-siting them is already being considered. The local tenants' association will be consulted about the new locations.

708.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a public telephone to serve the eight maisonettes for old people at Balrothery Estate, Tallaght, County Dublin; and if he will consider installing the telephone in one person's flat (details supplied) by agreement with the other old people as this person would accept responsibility for it.

An application for provision of service at this location does not appear to have been received. If an application is made to provide a privately rented coin-box the Department will provide it at whatever location is desired by the subscriber.

709.

714.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his Department will provide a public telephone kiosk outside a post office (details supplied) in County Leitrim.

It is planned to provide a telephone kiosk at the location mentioned. There are however over 800 kiosks included in the current programme for provision of kiosks throughout the country and it may be some considerable time before the kiosk in question can be provided.

715.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants in County Kerry who signed agreements and paid the required installation and rental fees and who have had their names, addresses and telephone numbers included in the 1981 Telephone Directory but who have not yet been provided with telephones.

It is not possible in the short time available to provide the exact number but it is about forty. Provision of service for these involves extensive line-work and is in hands for most of them.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason there has been a three-year delay in providing a telephone service for a person (details supplied) in Dublin; and when a telephone will be installed.

It has not been possible to meet this application because there is no suitable cable pair available.

Necessary engineering work to enable the application to be met is expected to be completed shortly and it is expected that service will be provided early next year.

725.

asked the Minister for Education if his Department have plans for the provision of a third level educational college in the Clondalkin area, County Dublin; and if he considers that a third level facility is urgently required in this rapidly developing area.

My Department are at present engaged in planning work for the provision of a regional technical college at Tallaght. It is the intention that this college would also serve the needs of the Clondalkin area in the immediate future.

726.

asked the Minister for Education the plans his Department have for the installation and supply of computers in national and second level schools in this country.

In the case of second level schools, I announced on 26 November 1981 that a contract had been awarded for the supply and installation of micro-computer systems to 105 second level schools by the end of 1981. This initial contract is the first step in the phased supply of micro-computers to second level schools. The applications received from other second level schools will be given due consideration early in 1982.

There are no plans at present for the supply of micro-computers to national schools.

727.

asked the Minister for Education the reason European Social Fund grants which are paid to students at third level colleges have not been increased in line with VEC grants.

I have announced an increase in the value of the European Social Fund training grant from £600 to £1,000 per annum.

729.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the threat to the future of St. Mary's College, Mountmellick, County Laois due to insufficient funds being provided by his Department to meet even the basic salaries of teachers on which there was a shortfall last year of £1,575; how this shortfall which will recur next year will be met; and if, in view of the urgency of this matter, he will raise the capitation fees.

I am not so aware. The amount of capitation grant paid in respect of the number of recognised pupils in the school in 1980-81 was well in excess of the amount required to pay the basic salaries of the number of full-time teachers to whom incremental salary was payable in accordance with the rules for the payment of incremental salary to secondary teachers.
