Vol. 331 No. 5

Written Answers. - Chemical Industry Employment.

624.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the number employed in the chemical industry at present; the value of its output; and the prospects for its future growth and development.

According to the Central Statistics Office, the total number of persons employed in the industrial group, chemicals, including man-made fibres, was estimated at 11,000 in mid-June 1981, the latest date for which information is available. According to the Central Statistics Office, the estimated value of production for the year 1980 was £687 million. This is the latest year for which output figures are available.

Ireland is recognised as an attractive location for new investment by the chemical industry and I am satisfied that the long-term prospects for growth and development in the sector are good.
