Vol. 331 No. 5

Written Answers. - Micro-Electronics Industry Employment.

625.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the number of persons employed at present in the micro-electronics industry; the value of its output; and the prospects for employment in the industry for the future.

The present classification system used for official statistics in this country and in other member states of the EEC does not make it possible to distinguish between the output of firms producing electronic goods, including micro-electronics, and those producing conventional electrical equipment.

According to the Central Statistics Office, in mid-June 1981 — the latest date for which information is available — a total of 19,400 persons was employed in the areas of manufacture of which micro-electronics forms part, viz — Office and Data Processing Machinery,

4,000; Electrical Engineering, 15,400.

According to the Central Statistics Office, the estimated value of production in the industrial groups in question for the year 1980 — the latest year for which output figures are available — was £559 million.

It is well recognised that Ireland is an attractive location for new investment by companies engaged in the production of advanced electronic equipment.

I am satisfied that the long-term prospects for growth and development in the advanced electronics area and in related activities are very good.
