Vol. 331 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telecommunication Training Centres.

57.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is implementing the decision to establish telecommunication training centres around the country; the locations; and when tenders will be invited.

Telecommunication training facilities are being provided to meet the needs of the organisation. New training centres were provided recently in the Dublin area at Kimmage and Glandore Road. Accommodation for a further training centre has been provided in Cork, and planning is proceeding for a replacement training centre at Sligo and for an extension of the facilities at Kimmage. The provision of training facilities at Athlone is also being pursued.

It is not possible to give a firm date at this stage for the invitation of tenders for the works yet to be undertaken.

Is Portlaoise not on that list?

When was Portlaoise taken off the list?

A site was acquired at Portlaoise to replace a temporary training school which ceased there in order to make way for an exchange and area headquarters development. That is still under consideration. When the details about Portlaoise are cleared up consideration will be given to it.

The House will have noticed that there is a contradiction in statements being made in the House today. The Minister said a while ago that I made a false promise about the training school in Portlaoise. Now we are told that the facilities were made available for the training school in Portlaoise. Would the Minister comment on how he can change his statements from moment to moment, or are they ricochetting from his Leader — the type of changeability in him?

The information the Deputy gave on 2 June was incorrect and is still incorrect.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of question No. 1 on the Order Paper of Wednesday last. I had asked to raise it on the Adjournment as a matter of major importance then but we had to yield to Deputy Flor Crowley and Bantry. I would appreciate the matter being allowed this evening.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

Might I have a written reply to Question No. 629 on today's Order Paper in order to indicate to the House how interest in the £9.60 has waned?
