Vol. 331 No. 7

Written Answers. - Lebanon Incidents Inquiry.

697.

asked the Minister for Defence the findings of the court of inquiry set up by the Defence Forces in relation to the incidents in Lebanon in April 1980 which resulted in the death of two soldiers and in severe injuries to another.

Courts of inquiry are held for internal military purposes in accordance with the relevant rules of procedure and Defence Force Regulations. The regulations provide that the findings and recommendations of courts of inquiry shall be confidential and shall not be disclosed to interested parties except in circumstances which do not apply in this case such as, for example, where a person is being tried by courtmartial for an alleged offence which has been the subject of a court of inquiry.

Having regard to the terms of the regulations in the matter it is not open to me to furnish the findings of the court of inquiry.
