Vol. 331 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dumping of Plumbing Fittings.

785.

asked the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware that manufacturers of plumbing fittings are on short time because of the dumping of inferior quality fittings on the Irish market; and the action he proposes to take in the matter.

I have received no complaints about dumping of plumbing fittings. Most of Ireland's imports of plumbing fittings are from member states of the EEC. Under the terms of our membership of the EEC imports from these countries cannot be treated as dumping since the Community is regarded as a single market. If there is evidence that suppliers are competing unfairly by abusing a dominant position in the market it would be open to the Irish company concerned to bring the matter to the notice of the EEC Commission which regulates competition in trade between member states of the Community. Similarly, if there is evidence of dumping from countries outside the EEC it would be open to the Irish company to complain to the EEC Commission which has responsibility for dealing with this matter also. In either case officials of my Department will be available to advise on the preparation of a case for submission to the EEC Commission.
