Vol. 331 No. 8

Written Answers. - Stardust Inquiry.

444.

asked the Minister for the Environment the cost of the Stardust Inquiry; who will pay for the inquiry; the total legal fees involved; and if he will indicate the names of the recipients and the amount in each case.

As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 6 of 22 October 1981, my Department are responsible only for the cost of the provision of certain facilities and services required by the tribunal in connection with the holding of the inquiry. The cost of these facilities and services in the current financial year is estimated at £600,000 approx. Some additional expenditure will arise in 1982 in connection with the preparation of the tribunal's report, but this expenditure is not expected to be substantial.

As regards legal fees, the Attorney-General is responsible for certain fees payable out of public funds. I am informed by the Attorney-General's Office that it is not possible at this moment to give the overall figure for legal fees as there are still fees outstanding, the amount of which is not yet ascertainable. A total of £307,456.50 has been paid to date, and with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a statement of the names of the recipients and the amount involved in each case.

I have no information on costs, legal or other, incurred by the owners of the Stardust Club and Dublin Corporation, who were also represented at the tribunal, or of costs incurred by the Garda Síochána in connection with the investigation of the fire.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in paying a house improvement grant to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

The delay in this case has been due to the failure of the applicant to reply to a request for certain information which was made to him on 19 May 1980, following an inspection.
