Vol. 331 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Licensed Trade Price Orders.

6.

asked the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism the basis for disparate price orders in relation to the licensed trade.

The price of alcoholic drink sold for on-premises consumption is controlled under the Maximum Prices (Intoxicating Liquor) (No. 6) Order, 1981. The system of control as embodied in this order became necessary as a result of court decisions made in relation to previous orders which specified the amount of the price that could be charged for a drink in a particular area of the country.

The present system is based on prices actually being charged in July 1978. While permitting of different prices as between geographical areas and between premises in the same area, it has been pronounced by the Supreme Court to be fair, equitable and without discrimination.
