Vol. 331 No. 10

Written Answers. - Cork High Court Sittings.

198.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the enormous backlog of High Court cases from the Cork area, he will give immediate consideration to the establishment of a permanent High Court in Cork city to serve the southern region of the country.

I am aware that there is a backlog of High Court cases awaiting hearing in Cork but the delay between the date of setting down and the date of trial there is not as great as that in Dublin.

I am, however, very concerned at the situation and as the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Government recently authorised me to introduce a Bill providing for an increase in the number of ordinary judges of the High Court from twelve to fourteen. That Bill, the Courts Bill, 1981, has already been passed by the Seanad and is at present before this House.

When the Bill is passed I will seek discussions with the President of the High Court on how best to deploy the increased manpower.
