Vol. 331 No. 11

Written Answers. - Expenditure on Schools.

617.

asked the Minister for Finance the capital sums expended on the provision of new national schools in the first six months of 1981 and in the months of July, August, September, October and November, 1981; the schools in each case; and the amount for each school.

618.

asked the Minister for Finance the capital sums expended on renovations and extensions of national schools in the first six months of 1981 and in the months of July, August, September, October and November 1981; the schools in each case; and the amount for each school.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 617 and 618 together. While capital expenditure on the erection of and improvements to national schools is met from the Vote for Primary Education, the expenditure under this heading is disbursed by the Commissioners of Public Works on behalf of the Minister for Education.

The relevant records are not kept in a form which permits abstraction of the information sought by the Deputy without an unjustifiable expenditure of time and effort. A very large number of schools and a still larger number of payments are involved. The central record of payments does not distinguish between new buildings and other works.

Payments for this service over the periods mentioned were as follows:— 1 January 1981 to 30 June 1981, £9,502,000; July 1981, £1,277,000; August 1981, £1,048,000; September 1981, £1,631,000; October 1981, £1,923,000; November 1981, £1,943,000.

Should the Deputy require the information in relation to any particular school it would be possible to supply it.
