Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Condition of Prisoner.

260.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has had any response to the representations made to the British authorities concerning an Irish citizen (details supplied) who is in Wakefield Prison, who is severely physically handicapped and who has been in solitary confinement without clothing since 1 February 1980.

Minister for Foreign Affairs (Professor Dooge)

The Embassy in London has been in contact with the British authorities about this person's circumstances in Wakefield Prison and upon receipt of fresh information the then Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs wrote on 19 October 1981 to a relative and to the Deputy about the matter.

I can assure the Deputy that the Embassy in London will continue to keep in touch with the situation. From a humanitarian point of view I hope that circumstances will become such that this prisoner's conditions of confinement can be improved.
