Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Industrial Development.

287.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the industries that have been obtained for the IDA site in Kilbarry, Cork city.

288.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will take the necessary steps to attract a major industry for the IDA site in Kilbarry at an early date because of the high unemployment figures in the north side of Cork city.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 287 and 288 together.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that development of their 196 acre site at Kilbarry commenced earlier this year and that the necessary infrastructural services are at present being provided. In addition, a 24,000 sq. ft. advance factory and 6×3,000 sq. ft. cluster unit financed by the private sector are under construction on the site.

The IDA are vigorously promoting the Kilbarry site for suitable industrial projects. I would add that the IDA have approved grant assistance for two major projects for the North Cork City area which at present employ in excess of 200 people and are expected to provide 950 jobs at full production.

289.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will arrange with the IDA to purchase land for an industrial estate in Mitchelstown, County Cork.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it is at present seeking to identify a suitable site for industrial development in Mitchelstown, County Cork.

290.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will state, in view of the closure of Glantworth Woollen Mills, County Cork with the loss of 30 jobs, if he has any proposals to set up a small industry there.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority are at present co-operating with the liquidator of the firm referred to by the Deputy with the aim of securing a takeover of the factory. The IDA have already arranged for a number of industrial promoters to visit the Glantworth premises.

Glantworth is in the catchment area of Fermoy where a new US company, which has been supported by the IDA, has recently commenced the recruitment of staff. This project will employ 240 people at full production.

Question No. 291 postponed.

292.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if, in view of the fact that industrial sites are not available in Tralee, County Kerry, he will arrange with the IDA to purchase land for industrial development there.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that they are at present in the process of purchasing a 28 acre industrial site in Tralee.
