Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Monaghan Road Grant Allocation.

361.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he is aware that the £92,000 allocated to Monaghan County Council for expenditure on farm roads has already been spent on cutting main road hedges; and the action he proposes to take on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to funds allocated in the current year for works which are eligible for assistance under the EEC western package for the stimulation of agricultural development in the less favoured areas of the West of Ireland.

Under this scheme, the block grant allocation of £385,000 to Monaghan County Council in the current year included a sum of £97,000 to finance the cost of a programme of improvement works on county roads used mainly for agriculture and forestry.

Under the local improvements scheme, the western counties, including Monaghan, were asked to give priority to works on farm roads which would qualify for EEC aid so as to attract the maximum aid available for farm roads. The grant to Monaghan County Council under the scheme this year was £100,000.

The returns of expenditure received to date from the council indicate that the improvement works being undertaken with the aid of these grants are in accordance with the grant allocations.
