Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Export of Foxes.

420.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will ban the export of foxes because of their scarcity for hunting and because of the possibility of this important species becoming extinct; and if any representations have been made to him by concerned bodies, including masters of foxhounds.

, Cavan-Monaghan): There is no scientific evidence available to me to suggest that the fox is in danger of extinction. Since August 1979 my Department have been monitoring the export trade in fox skins under a licensing system and there are no proposals at present to ban such exports.

Representations have been received from, on the one hand, bodies, including some masters of foxhounds, concerned about the protection of the fox and, on the other hand, from farming interests who point out that the fox is a pest and should not be protected.
