Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Lough Sheelin Pollution.

432.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the progress achieved by his Department in dealing with the pollution of Lough Sheelin; and his plans for the future of Lough Sheelin.

Cavan-Monaghan): Under the slurry transport subsidy scheme, approximately 13 million gallons of surplus slurry, which would otherwise have affected the lake, have been removed to date from the Lough Sheelin catchment. While the scheme has not yet resulted in a major improvement in the quality of the water in the lake, I am assured that the effects of this slurry removal are becoming apparent and it is hoped that, weather permitting, the lake's water quality will improve considerably in the coming months.

As to the future of Lough Sheelin, the Central Fisheries Board will continue to develop the lake as a brown trout fishery by means of restocking and predator control. The objective is to restore the lake as one of the premier trout fisheries in Europe.
