Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Cork Detention Centre.

52.

asked the Minister for Education his plans for setting up a corrective training school cum detention centre in the Cork area, for young offenders.

My Department has no plans for a place of detention or special school for young offenders in the Cork area. As far as the Department is aware the existing facilities for boys in the State are adequate. Finglas Children's Centre (a remand and assessment unit and a special school for first offenders); Scoil Ard Mhuire, Lusk, which caters for more serious offenders; St. Josephs Special School, Clonmel, which caters for more long-term committals. In addition the new secure school for boys at a cost of approximately £2,500,000 (building alone) is at present under construction at Lusk to cater for more serious offenders in the 12-17 age range.
