Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - National Library.

60.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the considerable loss and inconvenience caused to users of the National Library by virtue of the reduction in opening hours and of the resulting impairment of research work by many persons who are able to use the library's facilities only in the evenings and on Saturday mornings; if he will have steps taken to restore the previous hours of opening; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The decision to close the National Library at 9.00 p.m. instead of 10.00 p.m. has been taken by the trustees in consultation with the director. Regard was had to the considerable falling off in numbers using the library after 9.00 p.m. and to staff representations about difficult city-centre environmental and transport conditions. The Saturday opening hours remain unchanged. At present, the numbers using the library after 9.00 p.m. frequently drop below 15.

I am having the terms of your question brought to the attention of the trustees for their consideration, and would be very desirous of ensuring that the library service was fully adequate.
