Vol. 331 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Drawing Boards

4.

asked the Minister for Education the steps he is taking to ensure that drawing boards used for post-primary and third-level education are manufactured in Ireland.

It is my policy that Irish goods and services be used to the greatest extent possible in second and third level educational institutions for which funding is provided by my Department. This would apply to drawing boards in common with other items of furniture for schools. In briefing sessions and otherwise the Department remind the appropriate authorities for secondary and vocational schools of the importance of support for Irish manufactured goods.

Is the Minister aware that a firm manufacturing drawing desks submitted a project to his Department about eight months ago and have had considerable difficulties in receiving any communication from the Department either by telephone or in writing?

I am aware that a firm in County Monaghan, which may be the firm the Deputy has in mind, have become involved in this area. I understand that some of their products have been tested in community schools since October. The firm were in communication with officials of my Department quite recently in this regard. As soon as we get some indication of the evaluation of the equipment, the Department will be in a position to say whether it is suitable or otherwise.

When does the Minister hope to be in a position to communicate with this firm again?

I cannot really say at present. It is interesting to realise that at least 95 per cent of the furniture needs in educational institutions are met by Irish manufacturers. My Department are working in close association with the Institute of Industrial Research and Standards. That co-operation has been significant in helping to develop the school furniture side of the furniture industry. If there is any further way in which the Deputy feels my Department could be of assistance in helping this firm to develop their product, if he cares to contact me I will be only too pleased to assist him, if possible.

I appreciate what the Minister said about keeping an eye on the supply of material of Irish manufacture. Would he undertake to keep an eye on the third level to see that also obtains in third level?

That has been interesting me as well.
