Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - High Court Backlog.

133.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of High Court jury trials awaiting a listing in Dublin; and the consequent estimated delay in obtaining a hearing from the date an action is set down for trial.

134.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans to reduce the backlog of High Court jury actions awaiting trial in Dublin.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 133 and 134 together.

There are at present 2,883 jury actions set down and awaiting trial in Dublin, of which 500 are expected to be listed for trial next term. The average delay between the date of the setting down and the date of trial is approximately 20 months.

I am very concerned at this delay and, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Courts Bill, 1981, which provides for an increase in the number of ordinary judges of the High Court from 12 to 14, has now become law. I would hope that, with the appointment of additional judges, the High Court will be able to reduce its arrears of business to an acceptable level.

Question No. 135 postponed.
