Vol. 332 No. 1

Written Answers. - Galway—Aran Islands Ferry Service.

320.

asked the Minister for Transport if he is aware that the Aran Island transport development study was published four years ago, that some considerable concern has been expressed over the inadequacy of the present CIE service and that islanders are worried that private operators are taking advantage of the present situation; and if he will make a statement on the future development of the ferry service between Galway and the Aran Islands.

Various alternatives for meeting the passenger and freight requirements of the Aran Islands have been under consideration and I am awaiting submissions from local interests in the matter. When I have received these submissions and have had an opportunity of considering the various options, including the technical and financial considerations involved, I propose to formulate recommendations for consideration by the Government about the long term arrangements for the service between Galway and the islands.
