Vol. 333 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lismore (Waterford) School.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in repairing the prefabricated classroom at the Church of Ireland school, Lismore, County Waterford; and when these repairs will be carried out or an alternative classroom provided.

, Clare)): In April 1981 the Department of Education asked the Office of Public Works to report on the condition of the prefabricated classroom at the Church of Ireland School, Lismore, County Waterford. A report on the matter was made to the Department of Education on 22 January 1982. The delay in dealing with the case was due to staff shortages and pressure of work generally in the District Office of Public Works in Waterford. This situation has now been remedied.

The Department of Education sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the works on 3 February 1982. Arrangements are in train to advise the Chairman of the Board of Management on the execution of the works.

When I tabled the question I had not seen the state of the school in question. It caters for 38 children and consists of two classrooms, one of which is a converted stable and the other an extremely dilapidated prefabricated classroom. I ask the Minister, in view of the dreadful conditions pertaining, if he would consider a new replacement school for the existing two structures.

(Clare): My job here is the repair of the existing school. The Department of Education have sanctioned the necessary grant for the necessary repairs and I hope that that work will start within two to three weeks.

Would the Minister of State consider replacing the school?

(Clare): That would be a matter for the Department of Education.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
