The fault, which is in the underground cable, will be repaired within the next few days. Because of the number of such faults, which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there has been delay in repairing them.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (i) when the Caherciveen area, County Kerry, will be transferred to an automatic telephone service; and (ii) how this will affect the position of the existing telephonists in Caherciveen Post Office.
Automatic service will be provided in Cahirciveen in about six months time. Cahirciveen is the principal operator centre for the exchanges at Ballinskelligs, Cahirciveen, Caherdaniel, Kells, Portmagee, Valentia and Waterville. On conversion of Cahirciveen itself to automatic working, a significant reduction in staffing will be necessary as the demand for operator services will fall significantly. Day staff surplus to requirments will have the option of transferring or resigning on terms agreed with their union. Staff who opt to resign will be paid compensation and transferred staff will be paid a resettlement allowance. Night staff will become redundant on agreed terms.
Discussions are continuing with the staff about the phasing out of the manual exchange. Everything possible will be done to minimise the disruption to staff and individual problems will have careful and sympathetic attention. Some staff will be retained at Cahirciveen to cater for traffic until all the exchanges it now serves are converted to automatic working in 1983-84.
