Vol. 334 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport Service.

795.

asked the Minister for Education the reason the school bus which provides transport for children from Thomastown to Athlone, County Roscommon, no longer collects children at Naughton's Garage, Thomastown.

The children involved reside in either the Ferbane or Ballinasloe Post Primary Centre catchment areas. Under the terms of the school transport scheme, in order to avail of transport to Athlone post primary centre, they must make their own way to the nearest pickup point within the catchment area of the centre attended.

It came to the notice of the Department of Education that the service which operated to Athlone post primary centre was unnecessarily encroaching into the Ballinasloe catchment area — Naughton's garage is located in the Ballinasloe catchment area. This was irregular and not in accordance with the terms of the school transport scheme. The service therefore had to be curtailed to eliminate this unnecessary encroachment.
