887.
asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that the amount of gratuities and pensions paid to retiring soldiers are at an unacceptably low level; if he will make arrangements to have them increased to an adequate level commensurate with their service to the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The rate of pension payable to a non-commissioned officer or private discharged after 31 years' service represents from 47.4 per cent to 53 per cent of his pay, depending on rank. A gratuity of one week's pay for each year of pensionable service is also payable. These pensions and gratuities are increased periodically in line with increases in pay.
